Homeschool is Not School at Home {Homeschooling}

March 8, 2012 by Dana

I was on Facebook today, as I often am.  It’s my outside link to the world!  Anyways, an image was being shared about Homeschooling.  It related that Homeschoolers are NOT trying to do school at home but are instead trying to do Homeschool.  It completely reiterated my beliefs of education.

I believe education should be a natural process provided for children.  It should not be a routine of learning things that are not of interest or that are not necessary.  It should not be rote learning and memorization of facts.  Those can be learned while doing interesting things very simply and easily.

When I first began homeschooling my son, he was just a little boy.  At the time, I was convinced, mostly by others who were involved with Public schooling, that our school needed to be just like the public schools, in a classroom setting with specific curriculum.  Boy was I ever WRONG.

As the years passed, I began to learn more and I began to understand the learning differences in my children, I came to realize that I didn’t want a public school education for my children.  If I had, I would have sent them straight to that big yellow school bus that carried them to that brick building everyday.  I didn’t choose that and that was not something I wanted for their education at all.

What I did want was for my children to learn naturally.  I wanted to instill a natural curiosity about life and how and why things work as they do.  I wanted them to feel a sense of accomplishment as they figured out and learned these things seemingly on their own.

I also didn’t want my children to feel pushed educationally.  I don’t ever want them to feel like they are having to do work above their skill levels before they are ready.  During this journey of homeschooling we have had many challenges but all along, I could hear God directing me to just keep trying and remain patient.  I didn’t always listen.  I often fell into the “he should be doing this by now” trap.  “She is more than ready for this, why isn’t she doing it.”  The reason is because God wasn’t ready for their minds to open to those things. He had other plans for them in life.  He wanted them to remain children, just as I did.

As I began to follow the paths opened for us in learning and I began to learn more about these things I thought I should be pushing, my children began to learn.  They began to show strengths that I thought they were missing, yet were learning all the time.  They began to learn independently in things that interested them most.  All I needed was to be patient and as always the Lord would provide.  And he has!

It is a joy to see my children today.  It is a blessing to see how much they have learned and how far each of them has come.  They are each very different in their learning styles but they are each learning just fine.

School for us differs every month, as they need it to.  One month we may watch tons of movies on subjects we are interested in or may need to learn about because it goes along with our learning process.  The next month we may do tons of worksheets to learn.  And the very next months may contain tons of books that we read together.  How they learn the lesson is not the important part.  Learning the lesson is what’s most important.

Right now I am once again re-arranging curriculum.  This past month has been a video lesson month for us but now my children are requesting book work and worksheets to do.  They are ready and need this.  I’m fine with this because they are willing to do the things necessary to learn more.  The video’s have peeked their interest in learning and they are ready to learn even more.  For us, games work the same way.  They enjoy learning through educational games on websites and DS games they have.   All these things work together for us educationally providing Homeschool.

Education was not meant to be a routine schedule provided in an institution.  Education is a process that is taught 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as learning comes up.  It doesn’t stop when you walk out of a school building and it isn’t the responsibility of a teacher to provide to a child.  It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure your child knows how to learn all day long, as learning never stops.

This is homeschooling for us here at Luv’N Lambert Life.  What is homeschooling for you?

10 Things About Me {Thoughts From Me}

May 24, 2011 by Dana

It’s been a long day.  I’ve had the feeling of Satan breathing over my shoulder all day.  Not a pretty experience.  It’s lead to some serious misunderstandings and well, drama.

That brings me to this post.  I feel I should be honest, and I should truly let you know me.  I warn you that it’s not at all pretty.  I mean I am Human!  I can almost feel yall shudder at that statement!  I shudder myself.

Human – there I said it again.  I am HUMAN.  I am NOT PERFECT.

I have opinions, like all humans.  Opinions I have formed after being on this massive planet for the last 31 (almost 32) years.  Should any of us be faulted for that?  Nope, we are all imperfect according to the word of the Bible.

I know not all of my friends believe in God or the Bible but I do so bear with me, please.  I know yall are my true friends so you already do, though I’m sure you think some of my thoughts about “God” are bogus nonsense.  I never know because you never tell me, just as I try not to do you.  I appreciate that respect.

So, I’m getting off-track in my message.  There are some things you should know about me that I probably should have thrown out there a while back.

1.  I’m a recovering Dramatic.  That’s right, I can admit it!  I have been known to be quite the Dramatic in my past.  I still suffer this issue at times.  It’s something you have to learn to overlook.  People who really know me will tell you it’s not as bad as it once was.  I fight the urge to be a Drama Queen often, daily in fact.  I have learned to put away the crown and just let life be over the years.  But there are days, like this one in fact, that it’s just soooo very had to do!

2.  I can sometimes be selfish.  Oh, another one I can admit to! 😉 I don’t fall prey to this one as much now that I have my children.  In fact, I tend to be more selfless than anything.  I put my children and their wants first.  I put other’s needs first most days too.  Funny how having children really will change you!

3.  I speak my mind.  Not nearly as much as I once did but if I believe in it, I speak it.  I do my best to think about who could be hurt by things I say but sometimes I miss.  I remind you of my earlier comment that I am human.

4.  I am not afraid or ashamed to stand up for what I believe in.  This goes along with number 3: I speak my mind.  If you hurt someone I care about I will let you know.  If I disagree with you I will let you know.  If I have an opinion on something I will let you know.

5.  I am HONEST.  It’s a quality missing in many folks these days.  If you don’t want an honest answer, then perhaps you shouldn’t ask me.  As I said, I will tell you what I think and what I believe in.  I will make an honest effort not to hurt your feelings, to listen to how God tells me to breach a comment or thought to you, but it will be an honest opinion.  I do my best to take in both sides to form an unbiased opinion too.

6.  Sometimes I curse.  Yes I’m Christian but no I’m not perfect.  I try not to but sometimes I do it.  Reminds me to be thankful that God forgives!

7.  I am Christian.  I am not a devout, bible smacking, “you’re going to hell because _______” type of Christain.  I am a meager, little soul who loves God and Jesus and the Holy Ghost.  I pray hard for those who cross my thoughts.  I ask forgiveness for all in Jesus’ name.  I try to follow God’s rules and I do my best NOT to judge others for any reason, though sometimes I do fail (I am human).  I believe God uses me for His Good and I try to allow him to do that.

8.  I am a homeschooling Mom and it’s something I push for other’s to enjoy.  I admit it’s not right for everyone but many simply miss out.  This makes me sad for the parent and their beautiful children.  I chose homeschooling because my daughters both have Epilepsy and my son is ADHD.  I knew they wouldn’t get the education and attention they needed in Public School.  Our educational choice is Eclectic and Unschooling, varied throughout the year.  I know some will disagree with our method but the beauty is that it is our choice.

9.  I like being old-fashioned in my beliefs.  I like having tradition.  I put God first, my spousal relationships second and my children third.  I think of them all pretty much as being first though in some way.

10.  I learn I’m wrong on my own.  I don’t need you to “tell” me I’m right or wrong.  I have a bigger God to do that for me!  And trust me, he lets me know!  You cannot convey nearly what he can.  I simply won’t listen.

So those are 10 things you probably didn’t know about me but now you do!  If any of this changes how you feel about me, that’s ok!  I love yall anyways.

God’s Truth {Thoughts From Me}

March 31, 2011 by Dana

Lately, this one thing has been weighing on my heart.  I have noticed both online and off, that many people profess to be Christians.  Yet these same people still go around talking and thinking about things like many Non-Christians do.  This truly saddens my heart.

Please, note that I am not saying I don’t do these things at times.  I do.  I also do my best not to.  No one is perfect and if we were I’m sure our name would definitely be Jesus.

I have noticed many professed Christians talking in negative language about others who have ticked them off.  I have noticed others speaking of situations that are possibly negative, yet never shedding a Christian light into the “what if it wasn’t like that” aspect of thinking.  I have seen in my own family, members telling other members “sometime life is better without that person in your life”, speaking of what’s considered to be unwanted drama in their lives.  I have even seen sisters turn against sisters and brothers against brothers over such things.

My question is: is this what God really wants?  Is this thought process of negativity, of turning against one another, of NOT supporting decisions, thoughts, love and caring relationships through thick and thin, truly what God wishes of us as Christian beings?  Does God want us supporting each of these negative thoughts with a “yes I see it your way”?  OR Does He wish for us to see life and love through His eyes?

My answer is to take a step back and truly view the situation.  Truly attempt to see Life and Love through the eyes of the Father.  View things as He wishes us to see and don’t take the first response as your answer.  Some things are better left to prayer.

God doesn’t wish us to turn our backs on one another.  He doesn’t wish us to JUDGE one another or to LET GO of one another.  He wishes for us to see each minute thing, each burden through with love and support and caring of one another.  By all means, He KNOWS we are NONE perfect but He asks us to STRIVE to be our best.  Yet HOW can we be our BEST when we are busy being our worst?

Stop what you are doing today and really let these thoughts, these statements I have made, sink in.  Let the TRUTH of God’s LOVE sink in.  He loves EACH OF US REGARDLESS!  Why do we NOT LOVE each other in the same way???  Why do we allow the DEVIL to work in our lives, instead of allowing God to do His work instead?  Today, I am making the conscience decision to LET God WORK in my life, as it should be in all our lives.  God Bless!

Start! The Bible for New Believers {Bible Review}

November 18, 2010 by Dana

Start! The Bible for New Believers NKJV
Greg Laurie
Thomas Nelson Publishing
Available in a variety of book styles
Price ranges from $7.99 – $59.99 depending upon style.
This book is a creative explanation of the Bible for new beginners, and old readers. It was written to better explain the meaning of the Bible and it’s books to new believers. And Greg Laurie does an excellent job explaining it throughout the book.
It is written in the NKJV style beginning with the Plan for Salvation, in which Mr. Laurie explains what Salvation truly means and how Jesus gave his Life for each of us to live. The second chapter discusses the Secrets to Spiritual Success, or better put How to be a Christian. In this chapter he shows us what God expects of his flock and how to relate it into our lives. Throughout the rest of the book, in the front of each biblical chapter, Mr. Laurie has provided a summary of the purpose of each book and the meanings of important key words, like the bible chapter’s name, as well as other important tidbits every Christian should know. Also throughout the book, the author has provided Grow, Learn and Know sections further explaining what is being read. At the end of the book, Mr. Laurie has provided a section called Essentials/What every Christian needs to Know about God and Jesus, where he highlights different topics on the two and discusses what they mean to us as Christians. I believe that Greg Laurie has provided a thorough introduction and study bible for new Christians by writing Start! The Bible for New Believers.
Now according to Booksneeze, I’m supposed to read this book from cover to cover but with this type of book that could take quite a while, so I have briefly read through Mr. Laurie’s introductions to several of the Bible’s books. I find what’s written to be inspiring and encouraging to me as a Christian, always learning more about the Lord. I am definitely planning to use this book as a bible study for myself to learn more about what the bible truly means and how it relates to my life. I feel it’s going to be a great help to me, as well as others who choose to read it. It’s one book I truly recommend.

A Band That Has Gotten Me Through {30 Days of Truth – Day 13}

November 18, 2010 by Dana

Today’s Truth: A band that has gotten me through tough times.

I don’t think there is any one single band that has gotten me through.  I am a music lover.  I listen to all kinds of music, from all genres.  I love Christian music, rock, big hair bands of the 80’s, country – both old and new, 60’s bop music, and much more.  I love everything from Sugarland to Staind to Mandy Moore.  I have several song favorites too and could never pinpoint just one.
