What Homeschooling Is Like For Us {Homeschooling} {Epilepsy Awareness}

April 18, 2017 by Dana

5 Days of Homeschooling with Epilepsy and Other Issues:
What Homeschooling Is Like For Us

One of the BEST things about Homeschooling is that you can make it work for you!  You don’t need to follow anyone else’s schedule.  You don’t need to do Public School at Home.  You simply do what’s best for you and your family.

Homeschooling for us varies throughout the year.  Because our schedule is usually crazy with appointments at different times of the day, we have had to learn to adapt things to fit around this.  We homeschool year round, which means when the public school kids are at home, we’re usually still having school.

We’re also pretty eclectic educationally which fits right in with the Homeschool Review Crew since we never know ahead which vendors we will be selected to review and which we won’t.  We’ve been blessed to be selected for many wonderful items over the years while being a part of the crew and these items have easily been adapted to fit our homeschooling because of our personal style.

We also tend to use materials that allow us to work together as a family instead of individually which can take a ton of time.  Things like Apologia for science, unit studies by Amanda Bennett, Apologia for Biblical Studies and Story of the World for history have helped us to have a well-rounded educational experience while allowing us to adapt to the challenges our health issues present.

Unit studies have been a huge blessing because it allows us to often work through subjects of interest instead of following a more formal plan.  Many field trips end out our studies to give that hands-on experience my children crave.  This is just a fun bonus for all of us.

As you’ve probably guessed, we don’t follow a strict schedule.  I feel that learning is most important, not meeting a timeline that my children may not necessarily be ready for.  I enjoy watching their little faces when they truly learn something that speaks loudly to their hearts.  This is the method we’ve used for years and greatly enjoy following.

This is just a small glimpse into our homeschooling life.  We hope you’ve enjoyed it and look forward to sharing more with you!  Next up is Homeschooling On The Down Days.

Blessings,
Dana Lambert-Hodge

2011-2012 Curriculum Part 1

July 13, 2011 by Dana

As I mentioned in my last post, this year we will be stepping out of unschooling and into more structured school-style.  Think relaxed but formal.  I think a little more structure is necessary for our days and what better place to start than with school.
Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t use grade levels in our school.  I consider both Winston and Emmalee to be Elementary level and in comparison to public school, they are on different levels in different subjects throughout the spectrum.  I do not place them into one single catergory because of this.
That said, I do consider my youngest to be in preschool.  She will be beginning “real” studies with us this year.  We will work through various workbooks, learning letters and numbers, number relation and early writing skills.  I’m not 100% sure what curriculum I will be using with her yet but hope to figure it out very soon.

Winston and Emmalee will be continuing much of the curriculum we used last year.  We will be adding and changing several things but I am still working out the details.  The books we will be using are as follows:

Who is God? And Can I Really Know Him
This book is part of the What We Believe series published by Apologia Press.  We began it last year but will dive into it further this year.  I hope to add the accompaning color book at some point before we finish the book.  It is a look at Biblical Worldview written for Elementary level students (ages 6-14).

For Science, we will be working through Apologia’s Exploring Creation series.  Astronomy, Botany, and Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day are the current titles we own but I hope to add the others soon.  We LOVE this science program.  Each book fully covers its subject, instead of working in bits and pieces like other science curriculums.  Each book also relates the subject to the Bible and teaches a child to see science through God’s eyes instead of the world’s view.
For Reading, we will be working through Pathway Readers reading program.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE this reading program.  The books are simply written but very enjoyable.  They are Amish style, keeping twaddle to a minimum.  They are perfect for Charlotte Mason type homeschools.

For Grammar, we will also be using Pathway’s Climbing to Good English program.  We haven’t use this yet so it will be new for us.  I really think it’s perfect for my kids though and that they will really enjoy it.  I guess we will see!  We will also continue working with Scott Foresman’s Grammar and Handwriting books, which we also LOVE (and they are FREE).

For Math, we will continue to use Miquon.  We absolutely LOVE Miquon.  It’s perfect for us.  The kids love the simple activities.  They also love using the Cuisenaire Rods for each activity.  Some days we even pull out Lego’s to use instead, which the kids love even more!
For History, we will be using multiple things and I am totally EXCITED!  History is by far my favorite subject to teach.  This year I found a great deal on Tapestry of Grace, Classic Edition.  I know there is a newer version and I should probably invest in that but if we like Year One Classic this year, I will go with the new version next year.  Just going to take our time and see how it goes!
Along with TOG, we will be using both Mystery of History Volume 1 and Story of the World Volume 1.
We will be using these with TOG as our main history curriculum and Mystery of History as our secondary history, while using Story of the World stories and activities to add to and fill in as I feel necessary.  Using the three of these together will give us the best well-rounded version for History over-all.
These are the things I know we will be using this year but I’m still working out details.  I have other curriculum we will be using too but I haven’t quite completed that list for us.  I’m really looking forward to our lessons this year and I know the kids are too.  Now just to finish writing up schedules and lesson plans so we can get started.
What are your curriculum plans for this year?  I love hearing what other’s are using so please comment, share a link and share! <3

Story of the World Links

January 30, 2011 by Dana

Our current history curriculum is Susan Wise Bauer’s Story of the World. We love Susan’s books. Her short, but informative stories teach us much about the past. We use the main text along with the accompanying activity guide. We enjoy the provided activities but sometimes we feel that as great as the main curriculum is, it’s still lacking in some areas.

In my search to expand on Story of the World, I have been blessed to find many amazing sites. In this blog post, I will dive into each of them and share why we love them so much. Hopefully, our readers will also be able to find something useful to use as a supplement for SOTW’s history program.

My favorite site would have to be Lunablog.net’s Mosiac curriculum outline. This program provides a wonderful guide for SOTW1 and SOTW2 which expands to cover great Literature, as well as history. This is actually the spine for our own daily lessons. I was able to locate many of the suggested books on Ebay.com or Half.com.  This particular curriculum plan incorparates many great children’s books and poems, an introduction to timelines, and much, much more.

Another favorite comes from Run of the Mill Family on Blogspot.com. The title of the blog is The Chronicle of the Earth and it covers both Story of the World 1 and Story of the World 2. Run of the Mill Mom provides excellent resources to use for both books. She has a full list of movies that can be used to supplement the stories and eras the books cover, as well as a full printable lapbook, printable card game, a SOTW jeopardy game and much more! This website is an amazing resource to use with this curriculum.
Yet another favorite website comes from SatoriSmiles.com. This Mom knows her stuff and took a lot of precious time to create a great set of guidelines to use with SOTW. She provides a detailed list of supplemental books for you to use. Then further breaks the book down into each chapter and section, building upon it with more supplements and activities. She suggests related books, dvds, crafts, and even internet related sites. She shares a wealth of information to be used along with the book. This website is a wonderful resource for anyone using the Story of the World curriculum.
The next website is Lulu.com, which provides a downloadable eBook with workbook pages for SOTW1, which includes a two-day a week schedule. The pages rely on both the text and the guidebook for SOTW1.

The next website is called Our “Story of the World” Journey. This Mom has created a wonderful little website covering SOTW1 from the first chapter through chapter 15. She lists ideas, links and activities to go along with SOTW1. Some of the links go to short videos of the stories used in the book, and also some interactive sites to build on the stories and eras covered throughout the book.

Shannon’s Sharings is the next suggested website. Shannon shares TONS of ideas to use with the SOTW1 curriculum. Not all of the links on this site work but there is still a ton of useful and fun activities to do.

The last website comes from Jennefer at Smooth Stones Academy. Jennefer provides a guideline for using SOTW1 along with History Scribe, providing copy work and activities. She also provides a booklist created to be used along with SOTW2 and also SOTW4.

All of these websites provide something unique that can be utilized with the Story of the World curriculum. We truly hope you enjoy them and are able to find something that you can use on your own SOTW journey.
