For this review, we were given access to BetterRhetor College Ready Writing Essentials™ Premium Package. I really wanted this program as a review for myself, to review writing skills in order to create better blog posts for my future, and to help with my writing skills for the Novels I would like to write in my future. I thought it would be a perfect way to brush up on the things I learned 20 years ago in High School.

I was lucky in that I went to a College Preparatory High School that really prepared it’s students for the harder days of College. My school was centered on preparing us for the future, and that included 4 years of English that centered on writing skills. My entire 10 grade year was spent writing and correcting sentences to develop editing skills we would need for our futures. And that same teacher encouraged me to become a writer some day.

The BetterRhetor College Ready Writing Essentials™ Premium Package course wasn’t quite what I was expecting though. I did not realize that the course was provided through Teachable. So many people are going to this great site resource for their courses but for me, I would have preferred it to be a downloadable course that I could print and use without having to go to the website. It was difficult for me to work on as well because I ended up with over 40 unexpected medical appointments for the review time period, which kept me out of the home a great deal and without internet. I’m not able to work through my tablet but it would be a great option if you were able to do so.

All of that said, the course was great! Because of my appointment schedule I did not get the utilize the option of having my Essay critiqued and corrected by the wonderful Dr. William Bryant but I was supposed to make this happen. However, life doesn’t always allow things to happen the way we wish and with my upcoming hysterectomy, I just wasn’t able to make this happen.

I was able to use the course and view all of the downloadable documents, as well as the wonderful additions provided at the end of the course. There are 25 lessons in all. Each are different lengths and will take different amounts of time to complete.

The lessons are thorough and provide everything your student will need to know about the topic being covered. The course covers everything from Task, Audience and Purpose, to researching, to outlining, to writing the article itself, to self review and to finalizing what you have written. Additionally, you will find Model examples, an instructor guide and so much more at the end of the course.

Some of the courses also include editable downloads of worksheets that go along with the lesson. These are found at the end of the course and can be printed and written on or can be edited through your choice of a Word program and typed in as your work through. These worksheets were simple enough to answer and help your student achieve maximum success in the program as they work through the course.

I like that this course also helps you develop better reading skills. As a reviewer, reading is essential to my work. Because I want to do more editing in the future as a career choice, a review of reading skills was important to me. As was a review of outlining for working on my future writing as this is something that has been challenging me over the last year. Though I did learn these things in my high school, 20 years is a long time to be out of school and I really needed a brush up educationally on these skills.

The course greatly reminded me of my own high school prep writing courses and is extremely thorough in all it covers without requiring a great many weeks to complete. It would be a wonderful semester long course for any High School student who is College bound.
