learning
Another March 2011 Update!
So we have started our new curriculum and are GREATLY loving it! So much fun! The kids are learning a lot. Makes me really glad I have waited to do formal academics. Just proves to me that a Mother’s instincts truly are always right and that God will not steer you wrong!
I’m personally working on eating healthier, starting with cutting back on Pepsi. I drink the stuff wayyy to much, some days that being all I manage to drink. It makes me feel sluggish and yucky, yet still I drink it. Well, soon-to-be no more, my friends, at least not in the amounts I have drunk it in the past anyways! I am replacing Pepsi with Pineapple Juice, Sweet Tea (for now), daily Milk, more water, koolaid, Cranberry Juice and The Bulk Herb Store’s Stress Tea (yummy, favorite of mine!) and Peppermint Tea (which I make 1/2 peppermint and 1/2 black at this time). I feel sooo much better already.
Yesterday was a different day for us, as we took an unexpected break to head to Florence. The kids enjoyed the ride and we even managed some school work (reading our curriculum) on the ride. They were able to see the horizon line before a huge rainstorm came in and we discussed how it looked like a tidal wave or a mountain line on the skyline. Hands on Science, Hands on World education is the BEST! You won’t find that kind of lesson in a classroom! We thoroughly enjoyed our day away from the house.
When we got back, I was sooo tired that I decided to take a melatonin and get some much needed rest. Oh boy do I feel so much better today! It’s wonderful how God heals while we sleep. I feel like a completely new Momma!! I woke up a couple of times but it wasn’t long before I was back to sleep again. I’m so thankful for that much needed break and rest.
Today we are taking it easy. We have a light box to build this afternoon and that will be fun for us. Planting should be done this weekend. We decided that we want to make a garden this year. Funny, how God plans things, because I never thought we’d want to do that but we do! So we will be planting seedlings for our garden and learning some basic homesteading needs over the summer. I’m so excited for the kids and though I’m not a planter or outdoors girl, I’m excited to be able to share this experience with our family as a whole!
At this time, the kids are watching the Yogi Bear movie, while Momma does some things online that I’ve been putting off! I can tell from their laughter that they are having a wonderful time bonding over the movie. I’m so thankful for our family. God has truly blessed us.
March Update 2011
March has brought a lot of change for us. With the change of season, comes a new perspective on life. A new effort, a new dawning, a settled peace.
The kids have been enjoying observing these changes both inside the house and out. We have been visiting the pond at least once a day, have been playing outside more and watching the birds and bugs come to life again, as well as the plants and grasses. They are loving learning from nature itself and I am loving watching them.
I recieved our kit for Botany and our kit for Astronomy (both Apologia, which we LOVE!), both of which we will be diving into over the next few months. I’ve been waiting for the cold snaps to pass before setting into planting our seeds for Botany or attempting to view the stars, as it’s still a bit cold at night yet. I do believe that has almost passed though only time will tell.
This weekend we had our dishwasher installed and I can say it’s already a HUGE blessing to me. I’ve had dishwashers in past homes but I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated them as much as I do this one! I spent all my day yesterday cleaning dishes with the new dishwasher and washing up last weeks laundry. My kitchen and laundry areas look like completely new places! I’m estatic at the changes!!
Over the weekend, we bought Laycie a little stroller. It’s the best buy I’ve made in a month! The kids and I have enjoyed pushing her around the yard and she has enjoyed the fun attention. The added bonus is that with her in the stroller I don’t have to worry about her diving in the pond on our future visits. She is happy to sit in it and watch the world roll by!
Last month I invested in an iPad and I do believe it to be one of the BEST purchases I’ve ever made. It’s not perfect by any means but I enjoy reading from it and quickly checking the internet and the biggest bonus is NOT having to tote this heavy laptop everywhere! If only I could blog from it, it would be the BEST purchase EVER!
So this is my very quick, yet lengthy update on us. We are happily enjoying every minute of life. I have several reviews coming up, once the littles give me a bit more time to write them out. We have a lot of schooling to work on. But Happy Days are here again! Much love to all!
Unschooling and Other Thoughts
I have been attempting to keep up with what’s going on with my blog but I stay so busy with other things that there never seems to be time for that. It’s been a long week, with many thoughts involved and figuring out several things in my life. I feel God leading me into directions I have not yet been and I know I’m fully ready to rush into them full-force.
I’ve recently been asked many questions dealing with homeschooling, computers and antiques. In the past few days, I’ve had these things brought to my attention and being brought to my attention, I have disected what they really mean to me. So throughout this post I will try to express my feelings on each thought and how they relate to our life.
Just today a family member asked me to help them work on selling their antiques before they pass away. This is a sad thought but this family member is now 85 years old and knows her days are limited. She also knows that her family has no idea the value of her personal items and they will just toss them to the side, or give them away for practically nothing if someone doesn’t take care of the matter beforehand. It’s a sad fact that many people have no idea of what they hold in their hands before they simply toss it into a dumpster or hand it over to someone else to deal with. I’m more than happy to help this lovely lady disperse of some of her most prized possessions before her last day comes.
I’ve had several people ask homeschooling questions, as I mentioned earlier, and this has made me rethink our own homeschooling style. Are we Classical, Charlotte Mason styled, Relaxed, Eclectic, Unschoolers, etc? Thinking this over, I realize we are in fact many of these things. There are seasons in our homeschooling when we use Classical methods but mostly we are Eclectic, Relaxed homeschoolers with a bit of Unschooling mixed in.
I prefer to allow my children to learn through many different methods. I find this keeps them from becoming bored with their education. We use everything from television shows, websites, video games, textbooks, worksheets, even nature’s own provisions and much more to learn about every possibly imaginable subject each day. Our school is nothing like that of a public school and is exactly as God meant it to be. School, for us, is fun and exciting and definitely always a wonderful experience.
That said, the next few weeks bring a lot of busy-ness for us. My oldest daughter is turning 8 soon and we must prepare for her birthday party next weekend. She will not officially be 8 until February 17th but we are having the party a bit early. I’m also still working on the house re-vamping and hopefully tax money will bring lots of good things for organization. I’m hoping it will also bring some new homeschooling materials to use. Such excitement for us all!
I’m excited for these new things brewing in our lives. I’m excited to have new things to enjoy and share and be a part of. I look forward to the opportunities God is bringing into my life. It’s truly a blessing to be able to share my love and joys with others and I hope to be able to continue to do these things for a long time.
Many blessings to all!
Ringing in the New Year
2011 is finally here!
So far it’s a lot like last year. Nothing spectacular!
I’m bringing in this New Year with a cold. Stuffy head, watery eyes, cough. All the joyfulness of a winter bug! Knock on wood, thus far, none of the kids really have it. Laycie does have a bit of a cough but I’m hoping it goes away on it’s own. Winston and Emmalee are healthy as ever right now. I’m very thankful that they have such strong health.
I’m currently debating starting school back tomorrow or waiting another couple of days until I feel better. I don’t know if I even have the energy for it all right now. I suppose all I can do is wait until the morning to decide.
So for now, this short update is all I have. I sincerely hope everyone else is having a wonderful beginning to 2011!
