Library and Educational Services: Go Science DVD Series 2 {Crew Review}

June 26, 2014 by Dana

Welcome to Learning Time with Ben Roy!  Ben Roy is the “teacher” on Library and Educational Services excellent Go Science DVD’s.  He’s so much more than a teacher though as he loves to bring Science to life for children.
Go Science DVD’s have been created to be used with children who are ages 6-10.  For this review, we used the second series of the DVD’s.  Last year, we reviewed their original series.  Because we LOVED those so much, we chose two new videos for review this year.
Go Science Volume 1: Sound, Gravity, Space
and
Go Science Volume 2: Life Science, Weather
These videos were just as great this year as they were last!  Over the past year, we’ve watched our original Go Science DVD’s multiple times.  I didn’t notice a lot of differences between series one and two.  There are some new transitional effects but the main content is just as great as the originals.
Each video is a little over an hour long with segments in each covering the topics that the DVD is about.  Each segment lasts just a few minutes but packs a lot of information into that time frame.  You can choose to view the DVD by individual segments or to play all.  We like to play all because once we start learning, it’s hard to stop.  Plus Ben Roy really makes Science interesting with his comical ways and his witty humor.  I really learn a lot just listening along!  So do the kids!
Go Science videos are a huge hit around our house and this series is one we go to over and over.  The kids and I both enjoy watching the experiments and we have tried a few on our own after watching.  We’ve also used what we’ve learned through the videos to try out other experiments of our own.  Just viewing these videos has definitely changed our learning process and our own experiments in Science.
Through Go Science DVD Volume 1, we learned about the sounds that instruments make and were able to see an piano that had been taken a part.  Ben Roy showed us how the piano works which was completely new information for me.  Another fun experiment was the screaming soda pop can.  This one can be done at home with supervision.
On the main menu of Go Science DVD Volume 1: Sound, Gravity, Space you can choose between these three topics.  Clicking on each will provide a second menu of experiments that are related to each of these topics.  Between the three topics, there are 15 different segments with experiments to watch and learn about.
Go Science DVD Volume 2: Life Science and Weather starts the same way.  Clicking on each topic leads to a second menu.  Between the two menus, there are 12 episodes with experiments to watch.  Things like a Fire Tornado and Ping Pong Cannon, or How Much Do Your Lungs Hold are covered on this DVD.
Two of our favorites from Go Science DVD Volume 2 are the Naked Egg and Cloud In A Bottle.
The Naked Egg is the experiment where you soak the egg in vinegar until the shells dissolves leaving only the egg membrane and yolk in tact.  The egg feels rubbery and is see through.  This is a great experiment to really show what’s inside an Egg.
Cloud in a Bottle is an experiment where you place a bit of alcohol into a 2 liter soda bottle then pump air inside.  Clouds really form from this experiment.  Watching and learning how clouds are created lead us to find other cloud experiments to complete at home.

We love that Go Science DVD’s leave us thinking and wanting to learn more.  You can purchase these wonderful DVD’s through Library and Educational Services for $8.97 individually or you can purchase the 7 DVD series set for $59.82.

Norman Rockwell Presents Coming Home for Christmas {Propeller Review}

November 24, 2013 by Dana

Norman Rockwell Presents:
Coming Home for Christmas
Home Is Where the Heart Is

Meet the O’Brien’s: a typical American family who have their ups and downs.  Sisters Kate and Melanie stopped speaking to each other after Kate walked out on Mel on her Wedding Day.  Five years later and they still aren’t talking.
Their parents, Wendy and Al are being pulled apart from this falling out between their children.  Wendy keeps hoping to purchase the family home again but when a new family moves in, her hopes of reowning their old home and repairing this rift between her estranged daughters is lost.  Al adopts a new puppy to replace the missing element of his girls.  Neither one can cope with the one thing their family misses most: each other.
Can the sisters overcome their disagreements and hurt brought upon them from a bad choice years before?  Will the love of their parents’ become more important to them then the hurt they’ve caused one another?  And how have their lives changed for the worse or the better over the past five years?
To find out, you’ll have to watch Coming Home For Christmas available for $9.96 at Walmart.  This movie stars Amy Jo Johnson, George Canyon, Britt McKillip and Carly McKillip.  This cast is sure not to disappoint!  Coming Home for Christmas is a movie the whole family can enjoy!!

Legacy Documentaries – Little House On The Prairie: The Legacy Of Laura Ingalls Wilder {Crew Review}

August 4, 2013 by Dana

One of my favorite shows growing up was the Little House On The Prairie series.  This wonderful series shared the amazing life of a young prairie girl, Laura, who was quite mischievous and yet had a sweetness like no other on television.  This wholesome show portrayed a family that stuck in the hearts of many.
Little House On The Prairie was originally written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  The book series tells an exaggerated but truthful tale of her life growing up on a new frontier.  In Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Dean Butler shares with us the truth of Laura’s life in a way we’ve never had the chance to see before.

Legacy Documentaries, a company owned by Dean Butler, who played Laura Ingalls Wilder’s husband, Almanzo Wilder, on the Little House on the Prairie television series, has worked to create a wonderful series of DVD’s to showcase Laura and Almanzo’s life.  Each of these unique documentaries provides a vivid portrayal of what living in the days of moving West was like for both Laura and Almanzo, both individually and as a couple.  The look into the real world of Laura and “Manly”, as Laura referred to her husband, provides viewers with a better understanding of the author of one of the greatest children’s classics ever written.
Each video is an hour long.  Each video provides insight into the life of either Laura or Almanzo.  Each video draws those who love Laura deeper into understanding her life and her reasons for writing.
For this review, we received a single DVD of Little House On The Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Through this video, we learned the details of one of our favorite beloved authors.  We’ve previously read many of Laura’s books in our homeschooling and we absolutely love to watch the beloved television series.

Little House On The Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder provided us a look at the author herself and a better connection to understanding her writing.  This understanding has helped us build a better appreciation for the wonderful stories she has left behind.

Little House On The Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder is available on DVD for $24.95.  Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura is available for $21.95.  To learn more about Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura please visit Dean Butler’s Legacy Documentaries website.  To learn more about Laura Ingalls Wilder, you can visit Laura Ingalls Wilder: Historic Home and Museum.

Brain Food Learning: Fascinating World of Birds {Crew Review}

August 4, 2013 by Dana

From Brain Food Learning comes The Fascinating World of Birds!  Through this DVD, your child can learn important facts about almost every bird type imaginable.  The Fascinating World of Birds teaches your child important tidbits by showcasing each bird type in a information packed portion of video.
I knew The Fascinating World of Birds would be a HIT in our home because my children absolutely LOVE to learn about Birds and Nature.  We already have several bird watching apps on my iPhone so we can learn specifics about the birds we come across when we are out in nature.
The Fascinating World of Birds showed us some of these birds in their personal environments.
The Fascinating World of Birds takes you to the birds habitats.  It teaches the purposes of feather types, beaks, claws, and so much more.  It shares with you how each species of bird differs, how even some of the same species differ from each other and how the bird is adapted to the environment which it is found in.
That’s not all.  The Fascinating World of Birds also teaches you about how each bird raises it’s young.  This video shows you how the bird hunts and lives every day.  The Fascinating World of Birds takes you into the birds own fascinating world.
The DVD can be played all the way through, showing every bird episode continuously.  This option also plays straight through each review portion.  This is the option we used when reviewing this video.  My children were able to grasp the video as a whole learning important pieces of information while viewing which we then discussed afterwards.  Each took a different lessons from the video and different pieces of information which they have shared with each other in the past few weeks.
The DVD can also be played section by section by choosing the Birds option on the menu screen.  This allows you to concentrate on one type of bird, instead of all the birds at once.  The review portion allows the user to choose only a review of certain sections, allowing you to quiz your student without covering all the information at once.
As an added bonus, Brain Food Learning has recently released an accompanying PDF study for each of their videos.  These additional lesson worksheets help to reinforce the lessons provided on their videos.  We did not get these worksheets in time to complete with our earlier review of this video but I was able to print it
off for my older daughter to work through.  The questions and answers were easily completed by her and the extra lesson activities were enjoyable to her as well.
The Fascinating World of Birds would make a great lesson addition for students learning about Birds.  It could be used as part of a unit study, zoo lesson, or along with any flying creatures study.  The video covers a wealth of information that would be beneficial to anyone learning about birds.
The Fascinating World of Birds is available through Brain Food Learning for $14.99.  Brain Food Learning has many other wonderful videos available for purchase similar to The Fascinating World of Birds as well.
